On May 28, 2024, 90 enthusiastic Grade 8 students from Handsworth, Argyle, and Sutherland Secondary Schools in North Vancouver came together for an unforgettable day at the JABC Success Skills Summit, held at the scenic Grouse Mountain. This dynamic event empowered students with essential skills and boosted their confidence, preparing them for a smooth and successful transition into high school.
Combining Learning and Adventure
The summit blended interactive workshops and outdoor activities, which not only enhanced students’ mental well-being but also boosted their readiness for future success. Led by JA volunteers, mental health professionals, and Grouse Mountain staff, the day featured two key workshops. The “Success Skills Workshop” focused on peer support, networking, and collaborative planning. Meanwhile, the “Inquiring Minds Workshop,” hosted by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, addressed mental health stigma and coping strategies.
In addition to the workshops, outdoor activities like the Mountain Scavenger Hunt and the Mountain Ropes Adventure™ challenged students to work in teams and overcome physical obstacles. As a result, they built resilience, courage, and teamwork.
Positive Feedback from Educators
Shannon Skelly of Argyle Secondary expressed gratitude, saying, “The kids had a blast. Some had never seen snow before, so there was a lot happening for their adolescent brains. I’m so grateful we had this opportunity.”
Mark Fenn from Handsworth Secondary noted, “The feedback was extremely positive. The day connected perfectly with our Physical and Health Education curriculum.”
Lasting Impact
The JABC Success Skills Summit had a significant impact: 82% of students reported increased awareness of skills to support mental well-being. Additionally, 67% gained a better understanding of how crucial mental well-being is for life success. The summit provided memorable experiences and critical life lessons for the students as they prepare for high school and beyond.
