January 29, 2025 – JA British Columbia had the privilege of hosting the JA Leadership Breakfast at the Fairmont Waterfront Vancouver, bringing together business leaders, students, and supporters for an inspiring conversation on Generations of Success: Navigating Family Businesses.
Family businesses are a cornerstone of Canada’s economy, accounting for over 60% of private-sector businesses. They not only create jobs and drive innovation but also provide invaluable mentorship and career opportunities for the next generation. This year’s Leadership Breakfast provided a platform for thought-provoking discussions on the challenges and opportunities within family enterprises.
The event featured an outstanding panel of business leaders who shared their expertise and personal experiences navigating generational transitions. Our esteemed panelists included: Tristan Armstrong, CEO of Rocky Mountaineer, who spoke about leading a world-renowned luxury train experience while maintaining a strong vision for innovation. Karen Flavelle, Owner, CEO, and Chair of Purdys Chocolatier, who reflected on the importance of preserving family values while modernizing and expanding a heritage brand. Stuart Louie, Governor at London Drugs, who emphasized the role of corporate responsibility and community-building in sustaining a successful family business. Jennifer Podmore Russell, Chief Development Officer at Nch’ḵay̓ Development Corporation, who provided insights into strategic growth and fostering economic empowerment.
Expertly moderating the discussion was Kate Furber, Vice Chair of PwC Canada and Managing Partner for BC Region. Under her guidance, panelists delved into key topics such as succession planning, innovation within family businesses, and the advice they would give to their younger selves. The engaging Q&A session allowed attendees, including students, to ask meaningful questions and gain further insights from the panel.
In addition to the panel discussion, the event featured reflections from Ryan Wood, a JA alumnus and current Grade 12 student, who shared how his experience in the JA Company Program shaped his confidence and career aspirations. Ryan’s story was a powerful testament to the impact of JA programs in nurturing future business leaders.
The morning also included remarks from Robyn Chisholm (Scotiabank) and Kelly Edmison (PenderFund Capital Management), who underscored the importance of mentorship and philanthropy in empowering the next generation. Robyn highlighted Scotiabank’s commitment to investing in future leaders, recognizing the role of organizations like JA British Columbia in providing youth with the tools to succeed. Kelly spoke passionately about the lasting impact of JA programs and the importance of mentorship in shaping young minds. He reflected on his own experiences and the value of fostering entrepreneurship at an early age.
Our co-hosts, Wendi Campbell (JA British Columbia President & CEO) and Ryan Wood, did a phenomenal job guiding the program, ensuring a seamless and inspiring event.
This event would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, to whom we extend our deepest gratitude.
To all our panelists, attendees, volunteers, and students—thank you for being part of this special morning.
We look forward to welcoming you to our next JA Leadership Breakfast!
